I leave shortly for Washington, where I will testify--tomorrow and Thursday--about details of the US AIDS effort (I'm representing a committee of which I was vice chair). Both exciting and unnerving--when I was last in DC, 10+ years ago, testifying was one of my strong suits. I loved it; rather like taking an exam with lots of people coaching and supporting you. The trick is not in the written part, which is easy enough, but in answering questions. I am taking a camera and will try to have the moment recorded; also since Big People like Peter Piot will be with me I might even make C span. Watch for news, Theo, and post if you find some. [NB: My mom will be testifying in front of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions tomorrow at 10 AM ET and in front of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Thursday at 2:30 PM ET. I'm not sure if it'll be live online - but there will be archived video on the committee websites.]
Janet: I haven't read the posthumous O'Brian but I do remember the last novel or two being below standard. I have them all in the basement; perhaps I can use the reward of re-reading as a way to lure myself into more unpacking; we are very stalled on that effort. But I find as I get older that I'd rather not own any more books; there are more books than bookcases in this house and giving any up is very painful.
Helen, I am very grateful for Frances Partridge--but a bit ambivalent about those jigsaws on your blog; I like them too much. I'm afraid I've taken to doing the ones on the general site since you're not publishing new ones very fast. I like yours best, though.

Yes, I'm getting into a lot of trouble about those jigsaws. I seem to be solely responsible for a a lot of people wasting their time. I hope Washington goes / went well: I imagine that must be an exhausting combination of terror and exhilaration.
