Roger is currently in Mozambique and we are considering buying a "swords into plowshares" sculpture for the back yard. These are made out of gun parts--originally an important part of eliminating violence in the country after the civil war. Under a very creative project sponsored by Christian Aid, guns were turned in and exchanged for useful items like bicycles and hoes and roofing. Those running the project wanted to convert the guns to useful purposes but the smelting was too expensive--so the guns were cut into pieces. A small group of artists asked to be given the pieces and have been making (and selling) art with them ever since. There are some wonderful examples in the British Museum in London.
To be perfectly honest, gun parts are now imported from China to keep the business going.
