Cat lovers should be sure to read the story of the man in Texas on trial for shooting a cat who lived under a bridge and was cosseted by the toll taker. It appears, at my request, on the list of what Theo is reading--it's funny in a sad way. Roger is particularly taken with the picture of the substitute cat who I hope is being kind to the toll taker. It seems very Texan to shoot a cat with a rifle.
When we bought Anja the breeder made us sign an agreement not to let her run loose. I thought the prohibition excessive at first but have come to like it; at least we can remain guilt free about feeding birds. We have been very successful at that--the bad picture is of a small part of the huge flock of goldfinches (in winter drab) who come to the feeder every morning; the other picture has a
white-breasted nuthatch, one of our favorite birds because of the racing stripes. His red-breasted cousin has joined him recently.I saw a coyote the other night, have seen a fox (although not this year) nearby and our papers are full of speculation about the mysterious fisher, an animal which is said to be devouring local cats. And although Anja makes periodic dashes outside the cats both seem happy enough with their indoor life.
Helen, I am happy to report that the library has managed to come up with A Pacifist's War; I'm enjoying it but not actually as much as Love in Bloomsbury.

I'm belatedly catching up with the Le Comptes: I think I read the earlier volumes of FP's diaries because I was interested in the people she was writing about, rather than in her, and it was only as they went on that I began to notice her and what a remarkable person she was, and what a good friend.
I was telling one of my friends today about you and the paint and the cat litter: she was very sympathetic.
