Skiing and baseball

It all started around Labor Day. The weather got a little colder, and in an instant the attention span of everyone here in Denver turned to winter. And winter seems to mean one thing here in Colorado: skiing. It all began with SNIAGRAB (that's bargains spelled backwards), a massive ski and snowboard sale at the Sports Authority for which people camp out for days to be the first in line to get great deals on new equipment. Tiger and I opted instead for Ski Rex at Colorado Ski and Golf. We both wound up with some gently used skis and bindings and brand new boots. Those are my skis off to the left.

A few years ago, in an effort to bring more skiers out to the mountains, the resorts started offering heavily discounted season passes if you bought early in the season. The passes offer unlimited access to the second tier resorts, and most offer a handful of days at the top tier resorts. Tiger and I get the Colorado Pass, which is one of the most popular. Now all we need is some more snow. It's already started up in the mountains - Arapahoe Basin opened a few weeks ago and Breckenridge opens up on November 9. We hear the early season skiing is a bit rocky, but we can't wait to get out there and enjoy the snow.

Along with the cold and the anticipation of ski season has come a winning streak for the Rockies. They have won 19 of their last 20 games and are now up 2-0 over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series. They are in fact the only team besides the 1976 Cincinnati Reds to start their postseason swing with a 5-0 record. I am at heart a New York Mets fan, but having been dealt disappointment yet again, I find myself caught up rooting for the home team here in Denver. The first home game is tonight and Tiger and I got some tickets for the upper deck. The weather report currently predicts 40 degrees and light rain, so we'll be sure to bundle up.
