The pictures are from a modest parade organized by the town where we used to live. It was nice but had no band; parades need bands. Maybe next year (this is only their second effort). We are not doing terribly much today except lolling around which I think is very suitable.
Theo and Jenni are halfway across the country by now on their way to Denver--or at least they had planned to be. He tells me he will be blogging.
Comments to readers: I honestly don't know, Jean, whether I've just adopted Hillary's way of
spelling the name or this is the common way in the US; Theo thinks the latter. Religious patriotic songs, like America the Beautiful, are part of our tradition; they appear in a special section in the hymnbook. Not scary at all, I think; just different. Thanks for the reading suggestion, Janet; let me add What is the What by Dave Eggars; it's about one of the "Lost Boys" of the Sudan and is very good--a biography published as a novel that tells, after the fact, the refugee story through the first years in the US. You can all add it to your list of books to think about reading about Africa. Janet, I actually liked the Last King of Scotland as a movie a lot; Forrest Whittaker is really marvelous and deserved that Oscar; I'll give thought to the book. And Helen I will definitely move on to Frances Partridge this winter.

This website -- http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/hillary.asp -- suggests that "Hilary" is the commoner spelling. It's like "Banff" and "Bamff": what starts out looking wrong soon becomes the only way to do it.
Thanks Helen - I will be on the lookout for What is the What. Meanwhile my ears perked up when I heard a clip on Women's Hour on the BBC about the Lost Boys of Sudan. Further to items about Africa - I had an email from friends in Nairobi who now find the environment too unsuitable for family life so the wife and children are relocating to the Netherlands. Difficult decision. They have established quite a base in Kenya over the years.
