Now we are back to the really exciting topic of spring in Connecticut!
The weather has been good; everything is growing and blooming; all of us are enjoying ourselves. The first big step we took with landscaping was expanding the patio which was simply too small for the grill plus our comfortable teak chairs plus a table and chairs to eat at. The original patio was built two years ago--even though we bought the "same" stone the match is far from perfect. That's old stone on the left, new on the right. You can see all the same colors in the new bit, there is just less of that lovely buff color. But it's well worth it anyway; the size is just right now and I have some faint hope that the new stone will change color a bit as it weathers. That's a beginning "kitchen garden" with herbs off on the right. We'll have it all cleaned up and the furniture moved in a few days.
In order to take advantage of a sunny spot and to block the view from the patio over to the neighbor's yard we decided to grow beans up a tripod arrangement such as you can see in Kew Gardens. Roger, being a practical man, bought lumber and built it. The result is a most un-Kew like structure, particularly unattractive when viewed from inside. There has been a lively debate about replacing it or painting it or waiting for beans to grow up and conceal it. The resolution will appear in a future post. And finally,
nestled among our seedlings is a device of which I have become very fond. Any guesses what it is?

Roger, I feel your pain. Helen, please just support him ;)
Many has been my practical project that ended with Nikki saying to me "Greg, that is really ugly and cost nearly as much as the store made thing. Can we please just buy the pretty one in the store?"
Of course, every now and then a project goes really well and then nothing could be better in the world.
Our garlic, chives, tarragon, oregano, thyme , and hops all came back well this year. Supplemented with lemon thyme and some Basil it should be in great shape for Theo this fall.
I see something solar powered in the last photo and the title "charger" kind of gives away some of the purpose but what does it charge? I've been looking at wireless speakers for our back patio and would like to run them off of a solar panel when possible but haven't found any good solutions yet. Please tell me it's a solar powered speaker that connects to your indoor stereo!
I grow beans up a teepee made of bamboo poles. But maybe CT beans are bigger and heavier.
